Edinburgh Airport Information

Edinburgh is the fastest growing airport in Scotland. Originally started as a base for the Royal Flying Corps in 1915. It was operational during the First World War and later became RAF Turnhouse. The original factory was situated near the East Coast railway line. Aircraft arrived by train in crates, were assembled and sent into action from the grass strip.

RAF Turnhouse fulfilled a military role for over 40 years until the Ministry of Aviation took over in 1960. The British Airports Authority (now known as BAA plc) then took over the site in 1971 and was officially opened as Edinburgh Airport by Her Majesty The Queen in 1977.

By 1999 more than five million passengers had passed through Edinburgh Airport and a furthur 8 million are expected by 2009.

The airport recently underwent a £100 million investment programe to extend and upgrade terminal falcilities. The airport has a modern terminal building, two main runways and a large cargo operation.
